Does Servicing at an Independent Garage Void Your Warranty?

It is one of the most common questions we hear from drivers with a car that is still under warranty: "Do I have to go back to the main dealer, or will servicing with you void my warranty?" The short answer is that you are free to have your car serviced by an independent garage and keep your manufacturer warranty intact. Here is what the rules say, and what you need to do to stay on the right side of them.
What the law says
Since 2003, rules known as the "block exemption" have stopped manufacturers from tying a warranty to dealer servicing. The current UK version, the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order, came into force in June 2023 and keeps that protection in place. A manufacturer cannot refuse a warranty claim simply because your car was serviced somewhere other than its own dealer network.
What a manufacturer can insist on is that the car has been maintained properly. In practice that comes down to three things.
1. The manufacturer's service schedule must be followed
Every car has a service schedule that sets out what is checked, changed and inspected, and when. Your warranty depends on that schedule being kept, not on who carries it out. We work from the manufacturer's own service data for your exact model and engine, so the service you get here matches the one the dealer would do, item for item.
2. The right parts and fluids must be used
Parts fitted during a warranty-period service need to be of the manufacturer's quality, and oils and fluids have to meet the specification the manufacturer lists. That does not mean they have to be bought from the dealer. Original-equipment-quality parts from the same suppliers who make them for the manufacturer are fine, and that is what we fit. The oil specification is the one that catches people out most often, so we check the exact grade and approval code your engine calls for rather than using a generic "5W-30".
3. Keep the evidence
If you ever need to make a claim, you will be asked to show the car has been serviced on time. Keep your invoices, which list what was done and the parts and oil used, and make sure the service record is stamped or, for newer cars, updated digitally. Many manufacturers now hold service records online rather than in a paper book. We stamp the book, or update the manufacturer's online record where it is open to independent garages, and you will always get an itemised invoice from us that shows the mileage and date.
What about recalls and warranty repairs themselves?
Warranty repairs and safety recalls are a separate matter. If something covered by the warranty fails, the manufacturer's dealer will carry out that repair at no cost to you. Servicing with us does not change that, and if we spot something during a service that looks like a warranty issue we will tell you so you can take it to the dealer rather than paying for it.
Why drivers choose an independent for warranty servicing
The main reasons are cost and convenience. An independent garage generally charges a lower labour rate than a main dealer, and with branches in Newport, Lymington and Fordingbridge you are likely to have one close to home. You also get to speak to the people working on your car, and you see the price before you book.
If you are unsure what your car's schedule requires, tell us the make, model and mileage when you book and we will confirm which service is due.
