How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT (and Avoid a Fail)

Nobody likes the thought of their car failing its MOT - but with a few simple checks, you can dramatically increase the chances of passing first time. At Best Garages Ltd, we carry out MOTs at all three of our branches in Newport, Lymington and Ringwood, and we've seen how many fails could easily be avoided with some quick DIY maintenance.
Here’s what to do before you bring your car in for its next MOT.
What Does the MOT Check?
The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test checks your vehicle’s roadworthiness, emissions and safety systems. It doesn’t cover the engine or clutch, but it does include:
- Lights and electrical equipment
- Brakes, tyres, suspension and steering
- Windscreen, wipers and washer fluid
- Seatbelts and mirrors
- Bodywork and number plates
- Exhaust and emissions
How to Prepare Your Car Before the Test
1. Check All Your Lights
- Make sure all bulbs are working — including indicators, brake lights, number plate lights and fog lights.
- Ask someone to help check rear lights, or reverse up to a wall to see reflections.
2. Inspect Your Tyres
- Tyres must have at least 1.6mm tread depth across the central ¾ of the tyre.
- Look for visible damage, cracks or bulges. Don’t forget the spare if fitted.
3. Windscreen & Wipers
- Check for cracks or chips in the driver’s view (larger than 10mm may fail).
- Replace worn wiper blades and top up washer fluid.
4. Mirrors and Seatbelts
- Ensure mirrors are secure and undamaged.
- Check that all seatbelts extend and retract properly and aren’t frayed.
5. Clean the Car — Inside and Out
A tidy car gives a good impression and helps the tester access everything. Dirty number plates or excessive clutter can result in a refusal to test.
6. Watch for Warning Lights
If your dashboard is showing any warning lights (engine, ABS, airbag), it’s best to get these diagnosed and repaired before the MOT.
